Mechanisms Controlling the Air-sea Flux of in the North Atlantic

چکیده
The air-sea flux of carbon is controlled by the disequilibrium in partial pressure of carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and surface ocean. This disequilibrium is a consequence of the interactions of physical, chemical and biological processes in the ocean and, today, includes a response to the anthropogenic increase of atmospheric . Fig. 1 illustrates the annual mean airsea flux of carbon, , estimated from a knowledge of the atmospheric partial pressure, , and compilation of surface observations by Takahashi et al. (1999). The air-sea flux of carbon is determined by

Mechanisms of air-sea CO2 flux variability in the equatorial Pacific and the North Atlantic
[1] A global ocean general circulation model is used to estimate the magnitude of interannual variability in air-sea fluxes of CO2 and O2 from 1980–1998 and to examine the controlling mechanisms. The global variability in the air-sea flux of carbon (±0.5 10 grams Carbon yr 1 (PgC yr )) is forced by changes of DpCO2 and wind speeds related to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle in the ...

[1] A biogeochemical general circulation model is used to assess the impact of climate variability from 1992 to 2006 on air-sea CO2 fluxes and ocean surface pCO2 in the North Atlantic and to understand trends in the North Atlantic carbon sink over this time period. The model indicates that the North Atlantic carbon sink increased from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. Consistent with observations...
متن کاملSensitivity of sea-to-air CO2 flux to ecosystem parameters from an adjoint model
An adjoint model is applied to examine the biophysical factors that control surface pCO2 in different ocean regions. In the tropical Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the annual cycle of pCO2 in the model is highly dominated by temperature variability, whereas both the temperature and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) are important in the tropical Pacific. In the high-latitude North Atlantic and South...
متن کاملThe influence of Atlantic-Eurasian teleconnection patterns on temperature regimes in South Caspian Sea coastal areas: a study of Golestan Province, North Iran
The main objective of this study was to reveal the impact of nine climate indices on temperature changes and climate oscillations in Golestan Province along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Climate indices data from across the Atlantic-Eurasian sector were collected from the NCEP/NCAR, the Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) and the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) over a period of 40 years (1971...
